The Church Hoppers

In a series of columns for LEO Weekly, Zach Nord and I visited nine different Louisville congregations anonymously. We weren’t reviewing churches so we could bash worship—actually, we like church! But we did try to answer a serious question: “Are these congregations drawing people closer to God?”

Extreme Makeover: God Edition

In the final installment of our series, the Hoppers looked back on nine very different worship experiences. Were those churches all representing the same God?

Church of the Advent talks about hell

Hey, we didn’t bring it up: Father Timothy Mitchell put it in his sermon. Blame him.

Music, marriage, and a mosh pit

Worship at New Vision Ministry Center may have been a tad overdone, but you can’t argue with their passion.

Worship on the web–surprisingly, it works

Online church might sound like somebody’s idea of a joke, but it really exists at Lifechurch.tv.

St. Michael Orthodox awes and confuses

St. Michael succeeded in communicating a profound sense of holiness. But the Hoppers didn’t understand anything else in a 90-minute worship service.

The people are friendly, but money talks

The Hoppers loved the friendly atmosphere and authentic worship. Unfortunately, the folks at Pleasant Grove Baptist talked a bit too much about money.

2nd Presbyterian Church too highbrow for the Hoppers

We thought this congregation was (as Zach put it) too “Hoity-Toity.” We also had a problem with the sermon…

Steeple Chase

Installment # 1 in the Church Hoppers series. To kick things off, we visited Northeast Christian Church, St. Francis of Rome Catholic Church, and Canaan Christian Church.
